Hibernate? Not us!

Hi

'Don't 'hibernate' inside this winter...get hard at training, learning and making changes for next summer'

I wrote this in a prior email on periodization, however its worth putting out again....use the winter!

It's these cold, dark, wet evenings we all love so much here in the UK that you should be using now to get that body you want for life and doing some research, and getting a plan in place.

If you can get outside, of course there is safety considerations in the dark but we guarantee there will be a run group, boot camp outside, or a gym open near you right through the winter.

Some food for thought:

1) Nutrition: 'empty' calories from processed foods fool our bodies into thinking we are starving...as it doesn't see the required nutrients coming in, compared to a meal consisting of vegetables (good carbs), healthy fats and protein. The more 'starved' the body is the more the brain will slow our metabolism down to preserve what nutrients it does have..thus reducing any desire to move we may have. The opposite is true with healthy food, with all the nutrients it needs the energy is there in your body to get out there and do something. Ditch the 'comfort' food, eat correctly and never be hungry again!

2) Have the right mindset: don't let those excuses get in the way of your time to exercise or make the right good choices. Being focused on changing your life small step by small step will ensure the results you want for next year and beyond. Slow down and spend time inactive or use the quieter eves to get at it?

3) Go on how you feel: Reducing wobbly bits, bigger guns are good markers on success but the overriding measure is how you feel day to day. Guess what? If you feel tired and sluggish don't blame the season...it's a good idea to look to your diet, stress levels and sleep quality and make positive changes there.

4) Love the weather: Cold is actually GOOD for us in managed doses, walking or running in the rain is invigorating and a forest or beach hike in winter really blows the cobwebs away. I hear it all the time, getting out more makes us appreciate the weather and nature more. Central heating, stuffy buses and trains, ramped up air con with no windows open closes us off more and more from our environment.

Use the winter to address all the above and have the most amazing Spring ever!

The look you get from people wrapped up in their cars as you stride past in -3 degree mornings is priceless too!
