We can learn so much from our little people!

Hi

One of my new ventures last year was becoming a coach for Rugger Rascals.

Every Sunday I go over to a local park where I coach 3 classes of kids from 18 months up to  7 years.

I remember the call I got to see if I wanted the challenge.

My first reaction was a 'no' as back then it was way outside my comfort zone.

That would have been my major mistake of 2014....

Picture the scene:
  • 12 kids in a group staring at me with their parents behind them
  • 12 names to remember and get one wrong and you are in serious trouble
  • 12 kids to stop them head butting each other or running off in opposite directions
  • Once it finishes.....repeat it another two times, for 12 weeks!
Here are our two hard at it:

I've learnt more from this than all the books I've read in this year (and that is a lot!)

I've learnt how to play again and I've seen how incredibly fast children can move too.

Overall, it has shown me how amazing little humans are

As adults we have stories in our heads that tell us what we can, and more often than not what we CAN'T do.

What has blown me away the most has been watching the really young ones develop.

These little toddlers develop more in a week than I've done in a year!

They don't have these stories...they go on what they see NOW

Of course we get tantrums and they set each other off (the kids not the Dad's!).

However, once they get to that certain stage where they get aware of all their little team mates, and see that THEY aren't thumping the ground and screaming, a change seems to occur.

Maybe not that week, however over the next couple of weeks we all see a change. In fact the last people to notice is somehow the parents as they, naturally, are worrying about what all the other parents are thinking to spot the development.

Sometimes a change in a game, skill or even a way of showing a move can make a huge leap forward.

Some children like to be told, some shown and some like too muddle through on their own.

These kids totally believe that they can move to the next level and it is as natural as breathing!

Through this these little rascals have taught me how to be a better Dad, Manager and Personal Trainer.

Everyone learns at a different pace, through a different medium and to a different level, and EVERYONE learns well when they truly feel part of a community or team.

'always be the dumbest person in the room'

How can we go on learning when we aren't with people who challenge or encourage us to join them on the next level?

Keeping a beginners mind set is a really good way to ensure you don't end up 'out of date'

This little weekly challenge in the mud with a bunch of little 'beginners' teaches me that when it comes to learning and development I am the dumbest person out there!

Begin again with something today....
