Everyone has a ceiling on their ability and strength.
We are hard wired internally to leave some effort in the tank...its a survival thing.
To progress, we need to (carefully!) reach
outside of our current comfort zone so that ceiling is raised.
Whether it is hitting and extra 10 seconds on the plank, pulling the heaviest weight you have ever done on a Deadlift or even simply walking a few extra miles a week, we can make huge improvements just by getting tough and doing it.
That said, grinding through pain (or injuries) is NOT the way to go.....we must be smart, progressive and listen to our bodies BUT learn how to ignore
those inner doubts we have rattling around in our heads.
It's all about getting these thoughts in line with what your body and mind is capable of...and believing.
I've lost count how many clients I've given a weight slightly more challenging than they think they can lift and (after the usual choice words and protests) they invariably smash out the reps needed perfectly. The look on their face is always priceless...surprise mixed with
pride.
Working out is really tough, it really hurts and our bodies and minds rebel against it....but the toughness to push through never leaves once we earn it..
It really doesn't matter what level you are at, any amount of effort PAST what we think we can do strengthens you resolve to push even harder next time. View it as though it is a muscle you are training.
