Use those 'winter blues'

Published: Sun, 11/10/19

Hi

Cold, wet and dark conditions are not the most pleasant conditions to be out there exercising in.
Or...are they?!

What if I told you that those little moments next summer when 'that' swimsuit, smaller T shirt or shorts actually fit on that day when we can finally open the summer wardrobe.......are built NOW?

I've been running for years and hosted a few run clubs and often new runners learn to love running in the cold, or even the rain, MORE than the summer months.

Walking and cycling is the same, there is a real boost to motivation that comes once we shut that door and get out there.

And there it is...it is getting out the door that is the biggest hurdle!

Nice cosy houses, cars, duvets and sofas call to us after a day outside in the cold, however EVERY step outside we make with some kind of movement is a huge step towards that leaner and more energetic you next summer.

I've written about 'periodizing' our exercise across the year before. Different periods focus on different aspects, just as an athlete gets ready for the season.

Working really hard in the dark, winter months means we can take the pressure and time off exercising in the summer months to give us more time doing those things with our loved ones.

So, could this be the winter where you are HALFWAY to any goals you have on New Years Day?

Will that size smaller tank top that had a quick try on... and then went back in the drawer.....get some outside time in summer 2017?

The key to success is to focus on the long term mission as you build with small, incremental positive habits.

Quick fix, last minute routines will work in the short term...yet it is sustainability coupled with discipline that sets you free, forever!
