You may be wondering why I've chosen to add a picture of some onions here?
Is this a subconscious message to our inner behaviours?
No...it is to illustrate how complex we are as to get to our deep seated behaviours, beliefs and core values we have to peel back the layers of our experiences and learning's from our years on this planet!
When a client and I deconstruct a difficult movement (such as a squat or a barbell clean), we take extra time on any part of the move that is 'off form' or 'out of sync'.
This process takes as long as it takes and each try is a learning process as we get closer to the move becoming second nature.
If a move has been learnt wrong in the past this process can take longer as to re-adjust deep seated movement templates.
It has been approximated that it can take 200-300 attempts to make a movement
second nature, yet over 1000 to RE-learn a movement that had been learnt incorrectly.
This disciplined, repetitive deliberate practice and learning process possibly needs the same number of 'course corrections' in both these cases
Our behaviours and habits that make us US....need the same deliberate, careful and gentle focus on each layer when we wish to change any of these habits.
It takes bravery too..
Just as the most unconditioned and inexperienced person in a gym has to be the
bravest in the room compared to the seasoned gym bunnies, the least experienced or confident person in any situation needs to be the bravest to speak up or push out of their comfort zone.
I see it in my coaching of adults and children, starting small with low risk habit changes or new situations starts a chain reaction that leads to bigger and bigger changes.
Confidence is earned.
All that is needed is a consistent, disciplined and patient effort.
What is under that next layer that can help you reach that next level?
Remember the numbers of
attempts above...keep at it!
