Are you running on an old 'operating system'?

Hi

Behaviour change is very interesting to PT's and most health professionals.

Obviously deep rooted psychological issues are well out of our scope of practice, however helping people 'reboot' their system is a major part of accelerating a fitness or health journey.

Analysing and processing every decision we come to would take a huge amount of brain processing power.

The way we work around this is we have behavioural patterns that are 'stored' as almost a default response

We build on and tweak these with every experience we come across in general as we get older and wiser.

However do we do this enough, and are we going in the right direction?

In my other role I am a Sales Manager and one thing we try to encourage our teams to do every sales call/ day/ month is to process the results, highlight any challenges and share solutions.

You probably do something similar in your jobs.

Maybe it's time for a behaviour 'reboot'?

One quote I read in a coaching interview from a US high school strength coach struck a chord with me:

'Never measure self worth of a child by the performance of that child on the playing field'

I was a music nerd at school. I got out of games as much as I could be the last to be picked most times. Ahhhhhh!

I was told by my teachers that I was 'academic' not 'sporty'.

Of course this was maybe what I wanted at the time, however how much was guided by role models I wonder?

It would be different now, and would like to revisit these teachers and see if they still think that ;-)

I was coached wrong, or was my operating system still in Beta phase?

Could the fact that I hardly did any exercise from then up until I discovered Mountain Biking at the age of 15 yrs be due to this 'professional' assessment?

I believed the teachers and my own thoughts and ran with that.

Actually, when we apply the above quote, by believing that I wasn't sporty probably held me back with my confidence too.

They did me a favour though!

I'm now a 40 year old that realises that I can be an athlete and it's all relatively new and also have an extra dose of passion! ( as have something to prove to myself).

The more we dig deep and attempt to reboot or improve our beliefs to stronger our 'reboot muscles' get.

  1. Try writing down your most pressing challenges at the moment.
  2. What beliefs do you have personally that could be hindering you from overcoming these challenges?
  3. What evidence is there to suggest that these are TRUE. Does it come from you, other peoples opinions or, when you think about it, it is just a default behaviour?
  4. Choose one as a target to challenge over the next few weeks!
We should never stop learning!
