Detachment: A useful tactic!

Published: Wed, 07/20/16

Hi

Listening to an interview the other day with Jocko Willink, a Navy Seal who led one of the most decorated Navy Seal units in the Gulf War.

He was asked about the most important qualities for men and women as leaders and how do they  ensure they perform effectively in some of the most terrifying places a person can be in.

A huge part of this was the ability to step back, detach and assess the situation globally before making a decision to take action.

This split second assessment gives a person clarity of the reality they are in and takes the ego, personal fears, false stories etc out of the equation.

How often have you been a stressful situation or difficult situation  where all about you seem to be losing their control?

Have you joined them or did you mentally step back, take a deep breath and then step back in as a leader?

In a group environment dealing with other people, successful people are pretty good at this.

However, often when it come to ourselves are we any good at leading ourselves ?

Are you in other people's business so much that you aren't in your own?

Could be as a parent, manager, business leader or just a concerned friend.

Could you detach yourself from your OWN patterns, interrupt where you are heading and do all the things with regards to health you may advise a loved one to do?

If the answer is no...there could be work to do?

How about a mini challenge this week to really detach and try to view each decision, reaction or words you choose from the outside and adjust to a different way if we see fit?

Little changes like this can add up to a much larger positive change.

If you have always do what you have always done you will always get what have always got.

You may notice how good you are in situations more so than others...and this can give you a boost too!

How often do we give ourselves credit for how well we are doing? I know I can be my own harshest critic at times!

Ever found yourself thinking 'I really should follow my own advice!'

You are a leader..so go forth and lead ;-)
