Are you burning opportunities?

Hi

'Don't burn opportunities for short term comfort'

We've all done it..

Let the 'reasons' for not going to the gym, tonight's walk or to grab that extra piece of something naughty kick in and go for the easy route.

The path of least resistance is always there right in front of us.

Opportunities for monumental changes lie just past a barrier that can be real (a reason) or imagined (an excuse)

We all have that little pang of guilt when we follow that path of least resistance instead of taking the action we should do.

Of course it is a small glitch in the scheme of things and totally normal, none of us are perfect.

However, creating a bonfire of small glitches piled on top of each other over a day or a week burns any chance of that next opportunity for a gain in strength, willpower or progression.

Give yourself some slack, but make this only 5% to 10% of your total choices.

If you have deviated today, learn from it and use it to strengthen your resolve to nail the rest of the week:

  • carry two pieces of red card in your wallet, every time you slip up take one out and leave it at home...when you have none left you must then succeed in everything else in the week. Start again for the next week
  • create a simple spread-sheet on your phone with a 'good' and 'bad' column. Every time you have a small success add a 1 in the 'good' side and vice versa for 'bad'. Work to make the balance a positive one
  • use the frustration when you deviate as a learning experience. What was the environment, your mood and the situation? When next in this situation what will you try and do to avoid making the wrong choice?
  • be hyper aware of what you CAN control and what you CAN'T control. Focus on what you CAN do and the list of CAN'T's will get smaller

Lastly, work on spending time outside that comfort zone and the opportunities will come...
